The Milwaukee Wave Defeat the Monterrey Flash for the Ron Newman Cup Championship

MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin (May 5, 2019) – The Milwaukee Wave earned their seventh professional indoor soccer championship tonight by defeating the Monterrey Flash 5-2. Marcio Leite earned MVP honors with a goal and an assist.

These two teams came into tonight’s match with extremely different styles. While the Milwaukee Wave play a reserved style that seeks to outlast their opponent and take advantage of every mistake their opponent makes. Meanwhile the Monterrey Flash throw everything they can at their opponents in a never-ending onslaught.

Neither team could get a foothold early in the game as play progressed back and forth across the field.

The Monterrey Flash finally broke the stalemate midway through the first quarter. Veteran midfielder Carlos ‘Chile’ Farias took the ball down the left side and sent a pass that rattled around the boards, bouncing off Wave goalkeeper Josh Lemos and right to Flash forward Edgar Flores who gave his side the early lead.

The Milwaukee Wave evened the game up late in the second half. Marcio Leite intercepted a Flash clearance and took the ball to the right of goal. He sent in a shot that was initially saved by goalkeeper Diego Reynoso but rebounded off a couple of Flash players and into the goal.

The game opened up in the second quarter. Starting with Max Ferdinand, then continuing with Andre Hayne and a pair from Ian Bennett, the Wave scored four goals in the third quarter.

Sensing victory, the Wave closed nearly everything down from that point on. They got five players behind the ball every time Monterrey gained possession. The Flash were able to apply pressure to the Wave defense, but it was all from the perimeter. Anytime they were able to get anything through, Lemos was there to clean it up.

Monterrey was not ready to give up. In the fourth quarter, as a Flash power play was ending, Flores jumped on the rebound from a Farias shot and hit a rocket to the back of the net, bringing the Flash to within 5-2.

That’s all the closer they would get though as the Wave successfully held off any other danger from Monterrey. Fans counted down the final seconds and the players rushed the field as the newly minted MASL Ron Newman Cup Champions.
