STARS CLOSE OUT 2023 WITH 9-3 LOSS TO SOCKERS

by Pete Richmire

SAN DIEGO, CA. –  The Tacoma Stars (2-3-0) dropped their third game of the season and all three losses have come by way of the San Diego Sockers (5-0-0), this time by a 9-3 final at Pechanga Arena San Diego. Four players recorded three-point games, with Nick Perera notching three more assists in the losing effort for the Stars.

The game began with a milestone watch for both teams as Stars keeper Chris Toth entered the contest just four saves short of becoming the MASL’s all-time saves leader, surpassing Tacoma legend Danny Waltman, who is currently unavailable due to off-season surgeries. Toth finished the game with 10 saves and now sits atop the list of all MASL goalkeepers in the category of saves.

For San Diego, Kraig Chiles was looking to become the fifth player in MASL history to achieve the 400-point plateau, along with Franck Tayou, Ian Bennett, Leo Gibson, and Tacoma’s Perera. He picked up an assist on a Drew Ruggles goal in the second quarter, but the second point would not come leaving him with 399 heading into 2024.

Perera’s three assists were distributed to different goal scorers for Tacoma. Mike Ramos, Alessandro Canale, and Alex Caceres all found the back of the net against San Diego keeper Boris Pardo, who finished the game with 17 saves.

The Sockers were led offensively by Leonardo De Oliveira’s four-point performance (1G-3A) and a hat trick by Tavoy Morgan.

The Stars return home to host Utica City FC on January 6. Kick-off is 7:05 pm and for tickets head to www.tacomastars.showare.com today!
