St. Louis Ambush Extend Head Coach Hewerton

St. Charles, MO (April 7, 2020) – The St. Louis Ambush have signed head coach Hewerton to a five-year contract extension, the franchise announced today. Per league and team policies, no additional details were disclosed.

The extension will keep Hewerton at the helm of the team through the 2024-25 season. The recently completed 2019-20 season was Hewerton’s fourth as a head coach and his third with the Ambush. He was a player/head coach with the Cedar Rapids Rampage for the 2016-17 season, moving to the Ambush organization for the 2017-18 season. The Ambush were 3-19 during Hewerton’s first year with the organization, but improved to 10-14 for 2018-19. The 2019-20 season was shortened to 21 games for the Ambush due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the team finished at 9-12.

Hewerton enjoyed a 15-season career as a player, appearing in 296 games and posting 196 goals and 170 assists. He retired as a player after the 2018-19 season. He played for the Milwaukee Wave, San Diego Sockers, Detroit Ignition, Philadelphia KiXX, Chicago Mustangs, Cedar Rapids Rampage and the Ambush. He won three league championships during his seven years with the Wave.

“I am excited to announce that I signed an extension with St Louis Ambush. I am honored to be part of this organization and to work alongside the amazing owners Shelly Clark and Jeff Locker” stated Hewerton. “Their professionalism, vision and partnership will allow us to take the team to the next level. I am blessed to be part of this organization and I am going to continue to work extremely hard to develop new ways of play and help the team to be stronger.” Hewerton added that his off-season plans include relocating to the St. Louis area as he will be with the team in a full-time capacity once the COVID-19 restrictions have been lifted.

Jeff Locker, Ambush co-owner and GM stated “As the Ambush continue to improve on and off the field, we believe it’s important to have a full-time coach who lives in St. Louis. Hewerton is an important part of this organization and having him here will allow us to scout and recruit local talent more effectively. Having Hewerton active in the local soccer community is important to the Ambush as we continue to partner with various youth programs.”

The Ambush will kick off their 2020-21 season this fall. For up-to-date information during the off-season, follow the team on their official website, stlambush.com and on Facebook and Twitter.
