by Ian Cook

On the last day of Free Agency, the San Diego Sockers came to terms with of the most feared defenders in the Major Arena Soccer League. The Sockers have acquired former Soles de Sonora defender Raymundo Contreras for the 2017-18 Major Arena Soccer League season on a three year deal. Per team and league policies, exact terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

The Mexican hard man brings a take-no-prisoners attitude to one of the league’s top defenses. Contreras talent in the arena is undeniable. He scored 10 goals and dished out 8 assists over the course of the season. However, Contreras was also 2nd in penalty minutes for the season.

“Last season we made strides to tighten up our defense by bringing in Cerda, at times Felipe (Gonzalez), shifting Ray (Reza) to the back, and of course with the veteran leadership of Ze and Quiroz. Contreras adds another dimension and is the type of player the GM Sean Bowers craved last season. We are excited to see him in a Sockers jersey next season” – Chiky Luna, Director of Player Personnel

Contreras has top level professional experience in the Liga MX as well as playing indoor the last two seasons with MASL runner up Soles de Sonora. In addition to playing for Soles, Contreras previously played with Dorados de Sinaloa, Club Tijuana Xolos, and Queretaro.
