Veteran defender returns after career season in first year with SeaWolves

ORLANDO, Florida (May 21, 2019) – The Orlando SeaWolves continue their offseason roster movement by re-signing defender Richard Schmermund to a two-year contract, bringing back the St. Louis native until 2021. Per team and league policies, no further details were disclosed.

The 6’2” defender is coming off a career year offensively and defensively, setting personal highs in goals, points, and blocks. Notching two braces and his first career hat trick throughout the season, Schmermund scored 11 goals and added five assists, good for fourth on the team in both goals and points.

The defender had spent almost his entire career in the St. Louis area prior to joining Orlando back in June of 2018, debuting with the Illinois Piasa in the PASL back in 2013 before joining the Ambush midway through their 2013/14 season, eventually spending the next four seasons with them. Through his six professional seasons, Schmermund now has over 100 appearances, 42 goals, and 20 assists to make up 68 points.

"Richard stepped in and made an impact for us both defensively and offensively last season,” SeaWolves General Manager Chris Kokalis said. “As he continues to play more of a leadership role for our club, his best MASL years are yet to come.”
