MLS's TORRES RETURNS TO TACOMA

by Lindsay Mogle

TACOMA, WA. – It’s a homecoming of sorts for the newest member of the Tacoma Stars as the team has announced the signing of former Seattle Sounders FC defender Román Torres to a contract. Per team and league policies, the terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Torres appeared in seven games last season for the Dallas Sidekicks and his appearance against the Stars at the accesso ShoWare Center was met with many sightings of his Sounders FC kit in the stands and resounding cheers.

The Panamanian’s connection to the Northwest spans back to August of 2015 when he signed with the Sounders FC and he eventually appeared in 69 games for the team. None may have been bigger than on December 10, 2016, when he scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick against Toronto FC to secure the first MLS Cup in Sounders FC history.

Not to be overshadowed by his time in the MLS, Torres made 120 appearances for the Panamanian National Team and in 2018 scored the game-winning goal in a 2-1 win over Costa Rica to qualify for the World Cup. The day after his goal, which elevated his status to that of a hero in his home country, the President of Panama declared the day a national holiday.

Stars General Manager Nick Perera summed it up best by saying, “Roman is a big deal. We are talking about a player who has achieved so much in his career, who has represented his country at the highest levels, and who has already made a name for himself in the Pacific Northwest. I’m very excited to see the impact Roman will have on this Stars family, both on the field and in the locker room. Welcome back to your home Roman!”

The defender who has made a big soccer impact in two countries is just as happy to be back to the Northwest.

“I’m very happy to sign with the Tacoma Stars and belong to this beautiful family. I’ll see you soon,” Torres said.
