MASL PRO PLAYER COMBINE - INSIDE EXPERIENCE

The MASL Pro Player Combine presented by Capelli is just a week away. There are still a few spots left for players to register before Friday, but what can you expect walking in the doors in Mesquite?

We talked to two of the evaluators to give a little inside knowledge for those competing for a spot on one of the 14 MASL team rosters.

First, Alan Mayer, a native of Islip, New York and the only American ever to be selected as MISL MVP. His resume includes six Hall of Fame inductions, and roster spots on six all-star teams, the USA World Cup team and championship rings with the Kansas City Comets and the San Diego Sockers. Needless to say, this guy knows indoor soccer. So, what is he looking for in a young athlete? “I think to be successful as an indoor soccer goalkeeper you need the following attributes: strong desire, speed, quick reflexes, aggressiveness, fearlessness, good distribution with hands and feet, good decision making and lastly - confidence.  I will be looking for a player with these attributes,” he noted. Mayer also commented on a theme that will be close to all those in attendance at the combine, " I really feel there is a great future for indoor soccer in this country and I want to be part of it.”

Coach Jamie Swanner will also be working with the Combine athletes on the field throughout the week. As far as his accomplishments go, they are simply too many to list. A 17-year veteran of the game decorated with countless accolades and championships. Swanner is committing his time to the players because he feels, “This Combine is a great chance to help develop and shape the future of indoor soccer. Teaching and sharing my experiences plus my expertise is what fuels me on a daily basis.” As far as what he is looking for in young players he says, “it’s in a person’s eyes.” The desire to be a good student, learn the game and soak up all they can from the coaches.
