LEO GIBSON STEPS DOWN AS COMETS HEAD COACH

INDEPENDENCE, MO. – On Friday, the Kansas City Comets announced Leo “The Legend” Gibson is stepping down as the Head Coach of the organization. Gibson joined the coaching staff and served as an assistant from 2017-19 before taking the helm.  

Gibson will focus on his family and his charity, Kick for Christ, which was founded over 20 years ago by Gibson and Worteh Sampson with the purpose of using soccer and faith to reach young people. Kick for Christ’s current projects include building a school in Gibson’s native Liberia.

The epitome of Comets’ soccer, Gibson led the Eastern Conference in the first MASL All-Star Game which was held at Cable Dahmer Arena in December of 2020. 

Under Gibson’s leadership, the Comets never posted a losing regular-season record and reached the Ron Newman Cup playoffs including two semi-final appearances, in each season except 2019-20 which saw the postseason canceled due to COVID-19.  

Comets’ owner Brian Budzinski summed up what Gibson’s leadership and efforts have meant to him and the organization by saying, “I can’t begin to express my personal gratitude for Leo. As the Head Coach, he led the team through some of the most trying times and he did so with class and professionalism. The Kansas City Comets organization will always be indebted to Leo Gibson.”
