KANSAS CITY SPOILS AMBUSH HOME FINALE
Saint Charles, Missouri (March 17, 2024) – The St. Louis Ambush dropped an 11-5 contest to the Kansas City Comets Sunday afternoon at the Family Arena. The loss dropped the Ambush to 4-6-2 (wins-losses-overtime losses) on the season, while the Comets improved to 13-6-4. The win clinched a playoff spot for the Comets, who are now jockeying for position as they await who they will face in the postseason.
Kansas City dominated the first quarter, taking a 3-0 lead on a goal from Zach Reget and two from Lucas Sousa The Comets made it 4-0 in the second minute of the second period on a goal from Leonard Acosta before the Ambush finally got on the board 38 seconds later when Richard Schmermund scored. Kansas City continued to pile on when Ramone Palmer scored twice, giving the visitors a 6-1 lead at halftime.
In the fourth minute of the third frame, Sousa completed the hat trick to give the Comets a 7-1 lead. St. Louis chipped away at the deficit with an unassisted tally by James Thomas in the fifth minute followed by his second goal of the match in the eighth minute to make it a 7-3 game. Kansas City went up 8-3 in the twelfth minute on Acosta’s second goal of the afternoon. Michael Lewis put the visitors up 9-3 heading into the final stanza.
St. Louis inched closer in the fourth minute of the fourth frame when Lucas Almeida scored his 100th career goal, making it a 9-4 game. In the sixth minute, Kansas City’s Robert Palmer was sent to the penalty box for handling, resulting in a penalty kick for St. Louis. Thomas made good on the opportunity, posting a hat trick of his own, resulting in a 9-5 score. In the eighth minute, Lewis notched his second of the game for the Comets, making it 10-5 and did it again before the end of the game for an 11-5 final.
The Ambush wrap up the season on the road, with back-to-back games against Utica City FC next Saturday and Sunday, March 23 and 24, followed by a visit to Texas to clash with the Dallas Sidekicks on Saturday, March 30.
