Team’s All-Time Leading Scorer Re-Signs for Ninth Season

KANSAS CITY (June 29, 2018) – The Kansas City Comets made the first offseason player signing official today with the announcement of Leo Gibson re-signing with the club. Gibson, the team’s all-time leading scorer, returns for his ninth season as a player and his second as the team’s assistant coach. Per team and league policies, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Gibson was among one of the first players signed by head coach Kim Roentved when the team was first brought back to play in 2010 and he was the first person on ‘The Rocket’s’ radar as he looks to rebuild the team this season.

“Leo’s presence on the field is not something you can measure,” said Roentved. “Not to mention he is one of the top players in the league. It was my first priority to make sure that we were able to bring him back for another season.

Gibson reached a milestone last season with his 200th career goal for the Comets. He finished the 2017-2018 campaign ranked fifth in the Major Arena Soccer League in goals (30) and second in assists (28). For his Comets career, including playoffs, he has tallied 212 goals and 180 assists. Among active players, Lucas Rodriguez is second to Gibson in goals scored with 95.

Gibson is no stranger to accolades. He was the MASL MVP in 2014 after scoring 93 points (48 goals, 45 assists) in the Comets undefeated 20-0 season. In the three seasons since then he has been named to the MASL’s Second Team, Honorable Mention and Third Team.

“Kansas City is home for me now,” said Gibson. “I’m so happy to continue playing here and in front of the Comets fans. They have been very supportive and appreciative of me as an athlete and a person from the first day I joined the team and I am so thankful for their support each year.”

The Comets begin their ninth season this December at the Silverstein Eye Centers Arena. Season tickets are available now. Visit KCComets.com for the latest news and information about the Comets.
