FURY CAN’T EXTINGUISH SOLES IN SONORA, FALL 13-8

by Jeff Husted

The Ontario Fury, Driven by Mark Christopher Chevrolet, got two goals and an assist apiece from Mauricio Salles and Alex Caceres, but it wasn’t enough on Saturday night, as they fell to Soles de Sonora 13-8 at Centro de Usos Multiples in Hermosillo, Mexico.

The Fury (1-1) fell behind 3-0 but rallied back to 4-2 at the end of 1, as Salles and Caceres scored the first of their two goals, and a pair of goals by Tiguinho Dias to close the first half made it 6-4.

But Sonora scored the first two goals of the second half and held off a Fury rally that pulled the score back to 8-7. Daniel Lopez had three goals for the Soles, with Franck Tayou, last year’s league MVP, adding two goals and an assist.

Ontario goaltender Joey Kapinos was credited with 31 saves (on 44 shots) as Sonora peppered shots on its short field.

The Fury were playing with Nick Perera, who was unavailable after playing with the United States National Beach Soccer team at a tournament in Dubai over the week. Ontario will return to action next Saturday against the Tacoma Stars at ShoWare Center. The game will kickoff at 6 p.m.

Ontario will return home on Black Friday, Nov. 25, for a 7 p.m. game against the Turlock Express at Citizens Business Bank Arena. It will be Teddy Bear Toss night, as fans are encouraged to bring stuffed animals to the arena to throw on the field after the Fury’s first goal to be collected for local childrens charities.
