Former Panamanian National Team Captain Román Torres Signs With Sidekicks

Allen, TX. – The Dallas Sidekicks have announced the signing of former Panama national team captain, Román Torres. This will be his first season with the Dallas Sidekicks and in the MASL. Per team and league guidelines, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Torres started his professional career in Panama with Chepo FC in 2003 where he appeared in 27 matches and scored five goals. Throughout his career, Torres has played professionally in Panama, Colombia, USA, and Costa Rica.

On August 12, 2015, Torres signed with the Major League Soccer (MLS) team, the Seattle Sounders where he appeared in 85 matches for the club. With the Sounders, Torres scored the cup-winning penalty in a shoot-out against Toronto FC to win the 2016 MLS Cup which was the first in club history.

Torres made his Panama National Team debut on July 17, 2005, against South Africa at the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Throughout his national team career, Torres has made 120 appearances for Panama.

His most notable moment with the Panama National Team was scoring the game-winning goal against Costa Rica in the final qualifying match for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. This win, combined with the US loss to Trinidad and Tobago in qualifying rounds, allowed Panama to qualify for the 2018 World Cup. This was Panama’s first time going to the World Cup.

At the 2018 World Cup, Torres started all three games in the group stage and was the captain of the team. Even though Panama did not get passed the group stage, Torres achieved his dream by helping Panama reach its first-ever World Cup.

“Román Torres will be an enforcer for us. His experience and tenacity on the pitch is what we are looking for. I expect him to come in and fight with our team to get our first win of the season,” said General Manager Jessie Vilkofsky about Torres.

The Dallas Sidekicks have their next home game on Saturday, February 4th at 7 PM at the Credit Union of Texas Event Center for Youth Soccer Night.
