Comets sign 2022 MASL Defensive Player of the Year

by Pete Richmire

The Kansas City Comets bolstered an already-solid defense with the signing of the 2022 MASL Defensive Player of the Year Chad Vandegriffe to a three-year contract. This signing gives the Comets two of the top five MASL career leaders in blocks. Per team and league policies, the terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Vandegriffe, who will be in his 10th season in the league, tied a career-high with 54 blocks in 24 games last season for the Florida Tropics on his way to being named to the Elite Six team during the post-season award announcements. For his career, Vandegriffe has 240 blocks, placing him second all-time in the MASL.

This will be a homecoming for the Missouri native who started his MASL career with two seasons in St. Louis before joining the Milwaukee Wave for four campaigns. With the Wave on hiatus during the 2021 COVID-19 shortened season, Vandegriffe suited up with Florida where he stayed for three seasons and blocked 108 shots during the last two.

After playing for the Ambush and Wave for six seasons, teams that the Comets face regularly, Vandegriffe is very aware of the environment at Cable Dahmer Arena and ready to be a vital part of the Comets' push for the 2023-24 Ron Newman Cup Championship.

“The Comets have a rich history. I want to thank the organization for the opportunity to contribute to their success. I’m looking forward to playing in an unbelievable atmosphere with dedicated fans,” said Vandegriffe.

With 167 games under his belt and success on the field, the Comets gain a player whose contributions can be measured beyond statistics as head coach Stefan Stokic said, “We are very excited to have Chad for the next three years. He will bring a lot of experience to our back line and leadership on and off the field.”

Comets fans will have their first look at Vandegriffe on the Kansas City back line when the season kicks off during the fall and can lock in their seat to every exciting minute by visiting www.kccomets.com/tickets today!
