Comets reclaim Kansas City in 2016-17 rebranding

Fans and media across the country have dubbed Kansas City as the “Soccer Capital of America.”

While the Missouri Comets were a focal point of that conversation, the 2014 Major Indoor Soccer League champions hope to strengthen that reputation by returning to their roots and the soul of soccer in the Soccer Capital, by rebranding themselves as the Kansas City Comets; ahead of the 2016-17 Major Arena Soccer League season which kicks off in October.

“Although we have enjoyed being the Missouri Comets and experienced tremendous success, we are thrilled to have “Kansas City” in front our name going forward,” Comets Vice President of Business Operations Scott Levinson said. “The Kansas City Comets have a long history in this town, and the name really resonates with longtime fans who attended Comets games at Kemper years ago. We’ll have a lot of fun promotions tied around the rebranding, but one thing’s for sure though - the fun and excitement that fans have come to expect at our games will not change one bit.”

The franchise originally donned the name, the Kansas City Comets, when the San Francisco Fog relocated to the metro-area in 1981. They played in front of many sold-out crowds at Kemper Arena and reached the playoffs in seven of their first 10 seasons in the MISL before folding in 1991. The Kansas City Comets reappeared again for a four year stint from 2001-2005.

The team was revived in 2010 as the Missouri Comets, which was part of their lease agreement with the Independence Event Center (now the Silverstein Eye Centers Arena). Since the Comets’ return in 2010, the club has recorded a 58-15 record under head coaches Kim Roentved and Vlatko Andonovski.  Andonovski stepped down as the Comets head coach in August, and the team expects to announce his replacement in the coming weeks.

The Kansas City Comets season will kick off on Saturday, October 29th at the Silverstein Eye Centers Arena in Independence. The full 2016-17 MASL schedule will be announced in the coming weeks.
