COMETS HOST TROPICS SATURDAY IN SEMIFINAL MATCHUP

INDEPENDENCE, MO. - The Central Division Champion Comets (2-1-0) will open the 2022 Ron Newman Cup Semifinals this Saturday, April 16 at Cable Dahmer Arena against the Eastern Division Champion Florida Tropics (2-0) at 6:00 pm. This will be the first MASL playoff meeting between the Comets and Tropics. Overall, Kansas City is 6-5 against Florida in the regular season, though they last met on January 10, 2021 in Lakeland, Florida.

The Comets advanced to the Semifinals by eliminating the Dallas Sidekicks in three games, while the Tropics dispatched the St. Louis Ambush in two games. Florida will come into Saturday’s game with five days rest and the Comets played a full game plus 15-minute extra-time period on Tuesday.

Kansas City is led offensively by John Sosa (1G-3A) with four points in the playoffs. Nacho Flores and Lesia Thetsane are tied for the team lead in goals with three each. James Togbah, Benji Monreal, and Ray Lee each have a pair of goals in the playoffs for Kansas City.

In goal for the Comets, Nicolau Neto has made three starts and is 2-1 with a 3.09 goals-against-average, and .719 save percentage with his 23 saves. Florida started two keepers in their Quarterfinal matchup and both Jorge Navarrete and Rainer Hauss picked up wins allowing four goals. Hauss stopped 18 of 22 Ambush shots for an .818 save percentage, while Navarrete’s .750 save percentage came by stopping 12 of 16 shots.

In the post-season, Zach Reget leads not only the Tropics in goals scored, but the MASL as well with five goals. Combined with his two assists, he’s the team leader in playoff scoring with seven points. Victor Parreiras isn’t far behind Reget with six points on two goals and four assists. Tied for third on the squad in production are Ricardo Diegues and Ricardo Carvalho with two goals and two assists each.

After Saturday’s game, the series will shift to Florida for Game Two on Saturday April 23 to determine which team will advance to the Ron Newman Cup Finals.
