COMETS EXTEND WINNING STREAK TO FIVE GAMES

CHICAGO (Jan. 22, 2017) – The Kansas City Comets won their fifth straight game on Sunday afternoon, this time against the Chicago Mustangs, 7-6. Leo Gibson scored the game winning goal with 14.2 seconds left in the game, marking the third straight match won by Kansas City in the final 90 seconds of a game.

Alexis Camarena started the scoring off with a goal less than three minutes after the opening kickoff. The Comets answered with a goal from Leo Gibson and a pair from Vahid Assadpour to take a 3-1 lead early in the second quarter.

The Mustangs closed the gap with a Power Play goal from Osvaldo Rojas late in the second quarter, but at the halftime break, the Comets led 3-2.

Comets midfielder Bryan Perez opened the second half with a goal to put the visitors up 4-2.

That’s when Chicago’s star player Taylor Bond decided to try and will his team to victory. He scored three straight goals for his fifth hat trick of the season and gave his team a 5-4 lead with five minutes remaining in the 3^rd period.

Brian Harris equalized the game two minutes later and then provided an assist to Odaine Sinclair to give the Comets their second lead of the game.

Bond wasn’t done though. He grabbed a ball at midfield and drove down to just outside the Comets yellow line, letting loose a shot that was just wide of the outstretched fingers of Stephen Paterson. The shot found the inside of the far post and tied the game at 6-6 with only five minutes to play in regulation.

Head coach Goran Koradzov ordered his Comets to dial up the pressure as the clock wound down on the game and it paid off as Assadpour gathered a long arcing pass on the right side of the goal and tapped it to Gibson who drove home the winning score with 14.2 seconds showing on the clock.
