Barracudas Fall in Overtime

Sonora, Mexico ---- The Rio Grande Valley Barracudas fall in a high scoring fest against the Sonora Soles by a final of 14-13 in overtime on Thursday night at the Centro de Usos Multiple in Sonora, Mexico.

The first quarter feature of total of eight goals and it was started by the Soles courtesy of Daniel Lopez giving the Soles a 1-0 lead. The Barracudas responded via Austin Tom leveling the game at one a piece. Tom scored his second of the night minutes later to give RGV a 2-1 advantage.  Defender Ismael Pineda continued his scoring streak for a fifth consecutive game giving the Barracudas a 3-1 advantage.  Sonora tied the game at three when Gustavo Rosales and Franck Tayou got in on the scoring act. Forward Moises Gonzalez restored the lead for RGV giving them a 4-3 score. As the quarter finalized, the Soles knotted the game at 4 a-pieces to end the first quarter.

During the second quarter, the score fest continued as Jorge Quiroz scored the first goal of the quarter recovering the slim lead for the Barracudas making the score at 5-4. The Soles responded with three goals from Brian Borrego, Enrique Canez and Rosales to make a 7-5 game.  Sonora went on a power play, but Gonzalez had other ideas as he scored the short-handed goal trimming the Soles deficit to 7-6 for RGV.  Tayou would score on the power play for Sonora giving an 8-6 score at the break.

Sonora in the third quarter upped its advantage when Roberto Escalante scored off a Rosales assist producing a 9-6 score. Diego Rodriguez scored a goal off a Julio Hernandez pass making it a 9-7 game.  Canez restored the three goal advantage for Sonora making it 10-7.  Austin Tom scored his third goal of the night off a Manfut pass cutting the distance at 10-8 game.  Tayou potted his third goal of the night reestablishing the three goal advantage at 11-8.

In the last quarter, Sonora (1-3) pushed the score to 12-8 when Rosales netted his fourth of the night.  RGV (0-5) made a late come back when Fernando Moreno, Julio Hernandez, Luiz Mota, and Gonzalez all scored making it a 12 all game. For Gonzales it was his third goal of the night joining Austin Tom with three goals. The Barracudas completed the comeback when Salvador Luna made it 13-12 game. It was the first time that RGV made a comeback of any type.  Sonora tied the game at 13 all on a Christian Segura power play goal to send the game to overtime.

Lopez scored his second goal of the night in the overtime period giving Sonora the 14-13 victory.  

RGV goalie Arnoldo Pineda took the loss for the Barracudas and his record is 0-2-1, while Sonora goalie Daniel Vargas takes his record to 1-0-1.
