Barracudas add International Flavor to the Roster

HIDALGO, Texas (October 9, 2018) - The Rio Grande Valley Barracudas began preparations for the 2018-2019 season by building the team’s roster with some international flavor. The Barracudas have added Costa Rica international Diego Zuñiga, pending visa approval. Per team and league policies, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Zuñiga, who goes by the nickname ‘Tico', began his career in Costa Rica representing various teams in futsal until reaching the Costa Rican national team in 2001 where he led his team to the World Cup in 2002. He managed the same feat in 2006 as well. In 2017, Zuniga won the Golden Ball award in the CONCACAF futsal as best player.

After playing in several major international tournaments, Zuñiga was signed by the Baltimore Blast of the MISL in 2013 where he earned Rookie of the Year and helped the Blast win the MISL Championship. The following season Zuñiga and the Blast once again reached the MISL Championship game, but ultimately fell just short of the title. Diego would amass 45 total points in his two seasons with the Blast.

General Manager Oscar Ruvalcaba Jr. said, “Diego has been a quality player everywhere he’s been. Having experience in the league is also a plus and we are excited to have him on our roster. He’s an international with experience and a leader.”
