4-GOAL FOURTH FOR THE COMETS TOPPLES ST. LOUIS 7-3

INDEPENDENCE, MO. – On a night when the Comets (13-6-1) paid tribute to their past with 40 years of Kansas City professional indoor players in attendance, the team overcame a slow start to topple the visiting St. Louis Ambush (8-12-1) by a 7-3 final at Cable Dahmer Arena.

Ricardo Carvalho spotted the Ambush a 2-1 lead after the first quarter with a pair of goals with a marker from Mirko Sandivari in between. It was another game in which the Comets’ opponents scored first, and another game in which the Comets came from behind to pick up the win.

That comeback began in the second quarter as Lesia Thetsane knocked in an unassisted goal, and what turned out to be the only goal of the quarter, to send the teams to the locker rooms tied at 2-2.

Following a halftime celebration with dozens of Kansas City indoor soccer legends on the field, the current Comets also nabbed the lone goal of the third quarter to head to the final 15 minutes of play with a one-goal lead at 3-2.

It was in the fourth quarter that Kansas City opened up the game. Before they got that chance, however, Marcel Berry picked up the Ambush’s final goal of the game and tie the score 3-3.

Leo Gibson and Ray Lee connected on the next two goals of the game, the first one scored by Gibson, and the second by Lee on the power play. After Lee’s goal, the Comets were up 5-3 with 9:16 remaining in the fourth quarter.

The next six minutes were back-and-forth with neither team getting a great scoring chance. Once the Ambush brought their sixth-attacker on, Rian Marques went to work scoring back-to-back empty-net goals for the Comets to reach the 7-3 final.

The Comets will get no rest following tonight’s win as they head north to face the Milwaukee Wave at UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena tomorrow at 1:05 pm.
