by Allen Czelusniak

On a night honoring a star local goalkeeper who plays North of the Border, Alex Bono, it was a Silver Knight from South of the Border who scored the big goals for Syracuse.

Forward Moises Gonzalez blasted in two goals from the right wing in the fourth quarter, turning a 4-3 deficit into a 5-4 lead. Syracuse (3-4) finished off Harrisburg (3-4) by a final of 6-4, courtesy of a Joey Tavernese interception and goal a few minutes later.

The win puts Syracuse in second place in the MASL Eastern Division on goal differential.

The game was close and hotly contested all night. There were several blue cards issued, two penalty kicks and neither team led by more than 2 goals at any point in the contest.

Syracuse midfielder Kenardo Forbes was awarded the game’s first star, for excellent all-around play, scoring and providing two assists. Gonzalez earned the second star for his big shots in the fourth, and forward Slavisa Ubiparipovic earned the game’s third star for tallying a goal and an assist.

Harrisburg was led by midfielders Ricardo Carvahlo and Yaikel Perez, each tallied a goal and an assist.

The other highlight of the evening was the halftime presentation of a commemorative Silver Knights jersey to Alex Bono, who starred at Baldwinsville High School and Syracuse University prior to being drafted and playing for Toronto FC in Major League Soccer.
